One of the first things you need to understand when trying to clean your coffee maker is how to clean it. Many people think that the only thing that needs cleaning is the actually coffee pot where the coffee is deposited. While this may be the most visible part of your coffee maker it is not necessarily the most important parts for a well working machine. To properly clean your coffee maker you need to go beyond the coffee pot and get inside the machine through all the working parts that you can not necessarily see or reach by hand.
To begin cleaning your coffee maker you need to pour the appropriate solution. Many methods call for a water and vinegar mixture with about a 2:1 ratio between the water and vinegar. This is a safe ratio, but you can go as high as a 1:1 ratio of water and vinegar to make sure a thorough cleaning. On the first clean use a 1:1 ration and then go to a 2:1 ratio thereafter. This will ensure a deep first clean.
Once you have development the solution of vinegar and water place it in the coffee pot and let sit for a few minutes. This will allow it to break up some of the grime that has accumulated. After a few minutes pour the water and vinegar mix into the reservoir of the coffee machine where you would normally pour water when brewing coffee. Do make sure that you do not over fill the reservoir causing it to spill over.
Once you have poured all the solution in the the reservoir place the coffee pot back in its proper position and turn the coffee machine on. There is no need for a filter as you are not making coffee, but instead just allowing the solution to make its way through the coffee maker cleaning out all of the insides.
Once the coffee maker is done brewing and the water and vinegar solution has made its way back to the coffee pot allow it to sit for a few more minutes once again. Allowing the solution to sit in the coffee pot will again help break up all the residue. After a few minutes pour out the coffee pot.
Once you have completed the above steps you have essentially cleaned your coffee machine and made it a much more efficient machine that will produce fresher coffee. The only thing you need to do now is make sure the coffee maker is free and clear of vinegar and to do that you simply fill the reservoir with just water and run the coffee machine. Do this at least once and maybe even twice just to be sure everything has been flushed out.
The above steps is a clear and simple way to make a home made solution that will ensure a clean and better working coffee maker.
